The Drowning House by Cherie Priest
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Cherie Priest delivered again! I really enjoyed Melissa and Leo getting into situations, trying to figure out the problem, and trying to solve the problem (very dramatically), all while being complex characters with complicated feelings and big personalities. They call each other out constantly, and they support each other throughout even when they don’t feel like it. The plot stakes and the emotional stakes are hand-in-hand and on point in this story. I came for the decrepit old house with ghosts in the corners, the ominously moody beach, and the fractured friendship, and I stayed for the perfectly-preserved old house with ghosts in the corners (stunning mirror and foil!), thunderstorms, sister relationship, ancient witchery, and even more ancient cosmic horror. What a great way to kick off my spooky season reading.
